Hair Transplant
Hair transplants have been growing in popularity as a permanent solution for hair loss. Hair loss can occur on any part of the body, but it’s typically most bothersome when it happens on the head (most people don’t like to go bald). Anyone can lose hair on the scalp, but it’s more common in men than women. Roughly 85% of people who undergo hair transplants are men.
Hair loss is a common problem – 1 in 2 people will experience it in their lifetime. It can be temporary or permanent. It can be the result of aging, genetics, diet, hormonal changes, medications, or medical conditions. If you’ve been losing hair, you may be able to cover it with a different hairstyle or possibly a hat of some sort. However, if you’re looking for a more permanent solution, a hair transplant can restore your looks.
What is a hair transplant?
A hair transplant is an aesthetic procedure in which a trained medical provider moves hair from one area of the scalp (usually the back or side of the head) to a bald area (usually the top or front of the head). In other words, a hair transplant adds more hair to an area of balding on the scalp by taking hair from places where there’s thicker hair growth. The technique was first developed in Japan in the late 1930s and has since advanced considerably.
At present, hair transplants are performed in two ways – follicular unit transplant (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). In FUT, a strip of skin is removed from an area of the scalp that is less prone to balding and has naturally fuller hair, such as the back of the head. The hair follicles in the strip are separated and transplanted into the area of hair loss. The FUE technique involves harvesting individual hair follicles from the donor site and implanting them in the area of hair loss.
Are you confused about choosing between FUT or FUE? Two-thirds of hair transplants done currently are FUE. However, each method has its pros and cons. However, a new type of FUE procedure called NeoGraft is safer, more effective, and has a faster recovery rate, and we have invested in this procedure at Kurtzman Plastic Surgery. One of the main advantages of the Neograft procedures is that it doesn’t leave the patient with a linear scar on the back of the head.
Who can benefit from a hair transplant?
A hair transplant is a good option for men with male pattern baldness and women with thinning of scalp hair. It can also benefit people who have lost hair due to a scalp injury or burns.
However, a hair transplant may not be the ideal hair loss solution for people with widespread hair loss all over the scalp because this means there aren’t adequate donor sites from where to harvest the hair. Also, people who are prone to keloid scar formation and those who have lost hair due to treatments like chemotherapy are not good candidates for hair transplants.
How painful is a hair transplant?
A “traditional” hair transplant is performed under local anesthesia. Whereas this limits the amount of pain you experience, it is a surgical procedure, and some discomfort is to be expected. However, the Neograft procedure is very tolerable compared to a traditional hair transplant.
Following a traditional hair transplant, there may be some soreness at the donor and transplant sites. Your doctor may prescribe pain medication and anti-inflammatories to help reduce pain and swelling. You may also receive an antibiotic to reduce the risk of infection. There will be a bandage or gauze on the scalp for a few days. Stitches will be removed after about 10 days. Conversely, during a Neograft procedure, there are no stitches (or staples), so healing time is considerably less.
What is the success rate of hair transplants?
The results of a hair transplant vary from person to person. In some people, up to 80% of transplanted hair grows back about 3-4 months after the procedure. In others, especially people with dormant hair follicles, the results can be less impressive, and additional treatments may be necessary. Neograft has a very high success rate and is statistically more likely to work than traditional hair transplants. Furthermore, RealSelf (an independent website that allows real patients to leave their reviews on different treatments) shows a 94% satisfaction rate with Neograft.
How long does a hair transplant last?
The good news is that a hair transplant performed by a trained and experienced medical provider can last a lifetime. However, if you’re thinking about getting a hair transplant, it’s important to have realistic expectations from the procedure. It’s worth remembering that like normal hair, the transplanted hair can thin over time.
How much does a hair transplant cost?
In most cases, a hair transplant qualifies as a cosmetic procedure, and health insurance will not cover it, so you’ll be paying out of pocket. The cost of a hair transplant depends on various factors such as the extent of hair loss, the type of hair transplant, the skill and experience of the clinic, and your location. As a result, hair transplant costs in the US can range anywhere from $2,000 to $15,000. You may be given a per-graft quote, which typically ranges between $2 and $10. The larger the number of grafts you’re having, the lower will be the cost (volume discount). Most people have between 1000 and 3000 grafts transplanted during the first treatment.
A word of caution here. Some people are tempted to travel overseas to countries like Turkey for a hair transplant because of the significantly lower cost. However, it’s worth remembering hair transplants abroad are not properly regulated and could lead to serious complications.
Is it worth getting a hair transplant?
It depends. If you have thinning scalp hair or a receding hairline that bothers you a great deal, a hair transplant can help you regain a fuller head of hair with fewer balding areas. Hair transplants are generally more effective than over-the-counter hair restoration products like creams and shampoos. But whether a hair transplant will be worth it will depend on a lot of things – the extent of your hair loss, whether the hair transplant is affordable, and whether you have realistic expectations.
Men and women are both excellent candidates for hair transplants, and these procedures are gaining widespread acceptability. If you’ve tried less invasive hair loss solutions and they haven’t worked, a hair transplant could give you the dramatic improvement you’re looking for. What’s more, the hair redistribution is such that it’s near impossible to tell you’ve had something done.
